Silicones and Cell
Growth

Silicone rubber sheeting is offering the researcher a valuable laboratory tool in the continuing effort to grow human cells outside the body. The sheeting allows cell growth outside the body with duplication of the environment inside the body. Cells will not grow with direct contact to silicone rubber, but by depositing a protein layer on the silicone, cells will attach to this layer of protein and grow. The ability to stretch the elastic silicone rubber allows for systems to be built that replicate the dynamic forces that cells see in the human body. The ability of silicone rubber to transmit CO2, O2 and N2 across a membrane has been well documented in research literature. This physical characteristic of silicone rubber allows the researcher to construct "artificial lungs" for cell growth systems which replenished O2 to the cells and removes CO2 from the cells. The biological inertness of silicone rubber assures a non-toxic environment for the growth of cells. We are currently providing silicone rubber sheeting and tubing for researchers conducting studies of human cell growth.

How To Clean
Vulcanized Sheeting

Scrub with a clean sponge or soft brush in a hot water and soap solution. Do not use synthetic detergents or oil-based soaps. They can be absorbed, only to leach out and cause reactions later. Rinse in hot water. Follow with another rinse in distilled water.

Sterilization

STEAM

Wrap in non-linting material or place in a clean tray. Autoclave by one of the following:

  • High-speed instrument (flash) sterilizer. 10 minutes at 132 degrees Celsius (270 degrees fahrenheit) and 30 psi.
  • Standard gravity sterilizer. 30 minutes at 121 degrees celsius (250 degrees fahrenheit) and 15 psi.

RADIATION

  • Exposure at 2.5 megarads produces minimal physical property changes even at 200% elongation.

ETHYLENE OXIDE

  • Ethylene oxide will not deteriorate sheeting. This method is not recommended, however, unless you know how long it takes to complete outgassing of residual ETO and other byproducts for the system you use.

Shelf Life

60 months from shipment date when stored at room temperature.
